A category \(\mathcal A\) is balanced if any morphism which is at once an epimorphism and a monomorphism is actually an isomorphism. Given an additive category \(\mathcal A\) and a full additive subcategory \(\mathcal T\), then the quotient \({\mathcal A}/{\mathcal T}\) has only a weak structure in general. The paper under review studies when this quotient is balanced in case \(\mathcal A\) is abelian. If \(\mathcal T\) is a Serre class or if \(\mathcal T\) is functorially finite consisting of projective objects and closed under direct summands, the paper gives various sufficient conditions and equivalent conditions for the quotient to be balanced.
