The concept of trichotomy is a natural generalization of the classical concept of dichotomy in the theory of ordinary differential equations. Hence, the basic idea is to obtain at any time a splitting of the space into three subspaces: the stable, the unstable and the neutral subspace. In the paper under consideration, the author studies the concept of pointwise trichotomy in the context of skew evolution semiflows on a Banach space. Several characterizations of this concept are given and previous relations with earlier papers of the same author on the classical notion of trichotomy are also presented. It is remarked that the study can be also extended to control systems whose state evolution can be described by skew evolution semiflows.
