A basic task in abstract harmonic analysis consists in generalizing the Pontryagin duality for Abelian locally compact groups to arbitrary locally compact groups. Some approaches to this problem involved Kac algebras and, since the introduction of quantum groups, the interest has been addressed to that context. In the paper under review, the author suggests a generalization of Pontryagin duality from the category of commutative, complex Lie groups to the category of Stein groups with algebraic component of the identity. In this approach the enveloping category consists of a Hopf algebra in a proper symmetrical monoidal category.
