Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field. If \(G\) is a linearly reductive \(k\)-group and \(H\) is a smooth algebraic \(k\)-group, then \(H(k)\) acts by conjugation on the set of \(k\)-group homomorphisms \(G\to H\). The main result states that the orbit set remains constant when \(k\) is replaced with an algebraically closed extension field \(K\). To get this result one first considers a group scheme over an affine base, with linearly reductive geometric fibers. A vanishing result is obtained for cohomology of the group scheme with coefficients in a representation. One also needs to study how limits pass through the relevant functors. Remark on terminology: The Hochschild cohomology in this paper is commonly known as rational cohomology. It should not be confused with Hochschild cohomology such as it occurs in the Mathematics Subject Classification 2010 and elsewhere.
