The paper investigates the Smith forms of alternating matrix polynomials, showing that each invariant factor is an even or odd scalar polynomial. The first section is an introduction in nature. The second section provides some well-known tools and results from matrix theory that will be needed in the following sections. In the third section one focuses on the characterization of all the possible Smith forms for T-alternating (T-even or T-odd) matrix polynomials. Thus the authors show that the individual invariant polynomials of any T-alternating polynomial each have an alternating structure. Knowing the possible Smith forms of alternating matrix polynomials, they derive in the fourth section special Jordan structures that may occur for this class of matrix polynomials. The fifth section considers the problem of determining which T-alternating polynomials have a strong linearization that is also T-alternating.
