The paper deals with the behavior of solutions \(\Phi =\Phi ^{p}\) of the initial value problem to the equation \(-\Phi_{tt}+\Phi_{xx}=\left|\Phi \right| ^{p-1}\Phi .\) If the initial data \(\Phi _0, \Phi _1\) are smooth, obey a mild nondegeneracy condition and \(\Phi _0\in (-1,1),\) then the solutions \(\Phi ^{p}\) converge locally uniformly for \(p\rightarrow \infty\) to a piecewise limit function \(\Phi ^{(\infty )}\) taking values in \([-1,1],\) which can in principle be computed explicitly.
