A \(C_0\)-semigroup of operators \(\{T_t\}_{t\geq 0}\) on an infinite-dimensional separable Banach space \(X\) is said to be hypercyclic if there is \(x\in X\) such that \(\{T_tx:t\geq 0\}\) is dense in \(X\), or equivalently, if for any pair of nonvoid open sets \(U,V\subset X\) there is some \(t>0\) such that \(T_t(U)\cap V\neq \emptyset\). If for some \(t_0>0\), this last condition is verified for all \(t\geq t_0\), then we say that the \(C_0\)-semigroup is mixing. The first systematic study of hypercyclic \(C_0\)-semigroups was conducted by \textit{W.\,Desch, W.\,Schappacher} and \textit{G.\,F.\thinspace Webb} [Ergodic Theory Dyn.\ Syst.\ 17, No.\,~4, 793--819 (1997; Zbl 0910.47033)]. In that paper, they also characterized hypercyclic translation \(C_0\)-semigroups on weighted spaces of integrable and continuous functions; see [\textit{T.\,Bermúdez, A.\,Bonilla, J.\,A.\thinspace Conejero} and \textit{A.\,Peris}, Stud.\ Math.\ 170, No.\,1, 57--75 (2005; Zbl 1064.47006)] for analogous results with respect to the mixing property. All these results have been generalized by the author to \(C_0\)-semigroups induced by semiflows in [Ergodic Theory Dyn.\ Syst.\ 27, No.\,5, 1599--1631 (2007; Zbl 1134.37006)]. While \(C_0\)-semigroups are connected with first order Cauchy problems, cosine families are closer to second order Cauchy problems. A cosine operator function on \(X\) is a strongly continuous function \(C(t):\mathbb{R}\rightarrow L(X)\) such that \(C(0)=I\) and \(2C(t)C(s)=C(t+s)+C(t-s)\) for all \(s,t\in\mathbb{R}\). The hypercyclicity and mixing property of cosine operator functions have been considered by \textit{A.\,Bonilla} and \textit{P.\,J.\thinspace Miana} in [Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 136, No.\,2, 519--528 (2008; Zbl 1137.47034)], who found sufficient conditions in order that the cosine family associated to the translation \(C_0\)-semigroup satisfies both properties. The necessity in the mixing case was also shown. In the paper under review, the author gives sufficient conditions for the hypercyclicity and mixing property of cosine operator functions generated by second order partial operators on weighted spaces of integrable and continuous functions. Some examples are provided to show the strength of the results. Under mild additional assumptions, the necessity of these conditions is shown. Even more, hypercyclicity coincides with the weakly mixing property in this setting.
