A standard frame for a Hilbert space \(H\) is a family of vectors \(x_i \in H\) such that constants \(A, B > 0\) exist for which \(A||x||^2 \leq \sum|(x,x_i)|^2 \leq B||x^2||\), \(x \in H.\) The author introduces Schauder frames, shrinking and boundedly complete frames for Banach spaces and studies their general properties which do not depend on the choice of associated spaces. The concepts of minimal and maximal (associated) spaces and the corresponding bases with respect to Schauder frames are studied with regard to duality theory. Also studied are the extensions of James' well-known results (on reflexivity of spaces with unconditional bases) to spaces with unconditional frames.
