The authors propose a product quadrature approach for the numerical approximation of weighted integrals with weakly singular weight functions. The method is based on discrete quasi-interpolatory splines. A brief error analysis is given. Moreover the method is used to numerically solve weakly singular integral equations. The results are closely related to those presented by \textit{C. Dagnino} et al. in a series of papers published between 1990 and 2008 [see, e.g., Computing 50, No.~2, 149--163 (1993; Zbl 0768.41026), Numer.
