Decomposition of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces on the sphere (Q852593)

The authors introduce the spaces \(F^s_{pq} (S^n)\) and \(B^s_{pq} (S^n)\) on the \(n\)-sphere in terms of spherical harmonics (in analogy to corresponding spaces on the \(n\)-torus using trigonometric polynomials). It is the main aim of this paper to prove frame characterisations of these spaces in terms of elementary sharply localised building blocks, called needlets. The spaces \(B^s_{pq} (S^n)\) are used to study best nonlinear approximations on \(S^n\).
