It is known that any long knot is represented by an embedding \(\varphi:\mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}^3\) defined by \(\varphi(t)=(f(t),g(t),h(t))\), where \(f(t)\), \(g(t)\), \(h(t)\) are polynomials. In previous work, the author [J. Knot Theory Ramifications 8, No. 5, 667--700 (1999; Zbl 0934.57004)] showed a general procedure to construct a polynomial embedding for any torus knot. With known examples in mind, Akio Kawauchi made the following conjectures: (1) Every strongly invertible (long) knot can be represented by a polynomial embedding \(t\mapsto (f(t),g(t),h(t))\), where two of \(f(t)\), \(g(t)\), \(h(t)\) are odd and the other is even. (2) Every strongly negative amphicheiral (long) knot can be represented by a polynomial embedding \(t\mapsto (f(t),g(t),h(t))\), where all of \(f(t)\), \(g(t)\), \(h(t)\) are odd. The paper under review proves the first conjecture affirmatively, and gives a partial solution to the second conjecture. Several examples are also described by using a computer.
