Let \(Y\) be a reduced complex hypersurface in \(\mathbb P^n\) of positive dimension. The main goal of the paper under review is a generalization of the well-known result due to Griffiths that the primitive part of the intermediate cohomology of a smooth projective hypersurface is naturally isomorphic to the corresponding graded pieces of the Jacobian ring of \(f,\) a homogeneous polynomial defining the hypersurface [\textit{P. A. Griffiths}, Ann. Math. (2) 90, 460--495, 496--541 (1969; Zbl 0215.08103)]. The idea of Griffiths' proof is based on the fact that in the smooth case the Hodge and pole-order filtrations on the cohomology of the complement \(U = \mathbb P^n\setminus Y\) coincide. However in general it is not yet true. Some particular cases were earlier studied in detail by \textit{P.Deligne} [Actes Congr. Internat. Math. 1970, 1, 425--430 (1971; Zbl 0219.14006); Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 40, 5--57 (1971; Zbl 0219.14007); Publ. Math., Inst. Hautes Étud. Sci. 44, 5--77 (1974; Zbl 0237.14003)], \textit{P. Deligne} and \textit{A. Dimca} [Ann. Sci. Éc. Norm. Supér. (4) 23, No. 4, 645--656 (1990; Zbl 0743.14028)], \textit{M. Saito}, [Math. Ann. 295, No. 1, 51--74 (1993; Zbl 0788.32025)]. The key idea of the authors is to describe the Hodge and pole-order filtrations on the cohomology of \(U\) making use of the torsion-free part of the second Brieskorn module \(^{II}{\mathcal H} = \Omega^{n+1}/df\wedge d\Omega^{n-1}.\) Thus a direct generalization of Griffiths' theorem is actually obtained in the case when \(Y\) is a \(\mathbb Q\)-manifold. Furthermore, an elegant description of the Hodge filtrations in terms of the \(V\)-filtration introduced by M. Kashiwara and B. Malgrange is given and discussed. As a consequence the authors establish important properties of the Hodge filtration in the case of rational and locally semi-weighted homogeneous isolated singularities based on certain properties of roots of the local Bernstein-Sato polynomials and the spectral numbers of singularities. In conclusion they generalize Griffiths' description of the Kodaira-Spencer map associated with deformations of smooth open varieties and describe the action of the Gauss-Manin connection on the graded pieces of the pole-order filtration in terms of a multiplication relating graded quotients of the Brieskorn module.
