This paper explains an interesting idea how to assign a graph to an abstract 4-polytope: The vertices are just the 1-faces and 2-faces with an edge in between if they are incident. This concept turns out to be fruitful in particular for regular self-dual 4-polytopes of type \(\{3,p,3\}\). In this case the associated graph is bipartite, trivalent and 3-transitive, and the automorphism group is the extended (by self-duality) automorphism group of the polytope. It is also suggested to go in the reverse direction and to pass from a given trivalent and 3-transitive graph to a self-dual regular 4-polytope of this type. This construction, however, requires an extra assumption. In the same sense trivalent and 2-transitive graphs correspond to chiral and self-dual 4-polytopes.
