Let \(S^d\), \(d\geq 2\), is unit \(d\)-dimensional sphere in Euclidean space \(R^{d+1}\) and \(\mu\) is normalized surface measure on \(S^d\). The integral \[ I[f]:=\int_{S^d}f(x) \,d\mu(x) \] for a continuous function \(f:S^d\to R\) is approximated by \(m\)-point numerical integration rule \(Q_m\) of the form \[ Q_m[f]:=\sum^m_{j=1}w_jf(x_j), \tag \(*\) \] where \(x_j\in S^d\) and associated weights \(w_j\in R\) are such that \(\sum^m_{j=1}w_j=1\). Let \(H(S^d)\) is a subspace of the space \(C(S^d)\) of continuous functions on the sphere \(S^d\). The quantity \[ E(Q_m;H(S^d)):=\sup\{| Q_m[f]-I\{f\}| : f\in H(S^d), \| f\| _{H(S^d)}\leq 1\} \] is called worst-case error of numerical integration rule \(Q_m\) on \(H(S^d)\). In this paper, the authors study worst-case error of numerical integration rule \(Q_m\) on Sobolev space \(H^{\alpha}(S^d)\) where \(\alpha>d/2\). More precisely, infinite sequences \((Q_{m(n)})_{n\in N}\) of the form \((*)\) are considered where \(Q_{m(n)}\) is exact for all spherical polynomials of degree \(\leq n\). It is shown that \(E(Q_{m(n)}; H^{\alpha}(S^d))\) has the upper bound \(Cn^{-\alpha}\), where the constant \(C\) depends on \(\alpha\) and \(d\). This extends a recent result for the sphere \(S^2\) by K. Hesse and I. H. Sloan.
