Let \(G\) be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field. In his investigation of parabolic character sheaves Lusztig has introduced certain \(G\times G\) varieties, written \(\widetilde Z_{J,y,\delta}\) in this paper. This class of varieties contains the socalled pieces in the wonderful compactification when \(G\) is of adjoint type. The author also considers a version \(\overline{G^1}\) of the wonderful compactification, where the \(G\times G\) action is twisted. This version arises when one starts compactifying a connected component \(G^1\) not containing the identity, in a group \(\widehat G\) that has \(G\) as component of the identity. One runs into such disconnected groups when studying perverse sheafs on the wonderful compactification in terms of smaller groups. The author defines a notion of character sheaves on \(\widetilde Z_{J,y,\delta}\). He shows that it is equivalent with earlier definitions by Lusztig and then uses the new definition to derive further properties of character sheaves on \(\overline{G^1}\).
