Let \(R = k[x_1,\ldots,x_n]\) denote the polynomial ring in \(n\) variables over the field \(k.\) For a finitely generated graded \(R\)-module \(M\) and \(i \in \mathbb Z\) let \(K^i(M) = \text{ Ext}_R^{n-i}(M, R(-n))\) denote the \(i\)-th module of deficiency, see e.g. the reviewer's book [Dualisierende Komplexe in der lokalen Algebra und Buchsbaum-Ringe, Lect. Notes Math. 907 (1982; Zbl 0484.13016)] for further information. Recall that \(K^d(M), d= \dim M,\) is called the canonical module of \(M.\) The aim of the paper under review is to estimate the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \(K^d(M)\) and to analyze the relationship of it to the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \(K^i(M), i < \dim M,\) in particular in terms of the homological degree and the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \(M\) itself. As one of the main results the author prove: Let \(H_{n,i,r}\) denote the set of numerical functions \(h: \mathbb Z \to \mathbb Z\) such that there exists a homogeneous ideal \(I\) in \(R\) such that (i) the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of \(I\) is at most \(r,\) and (ii) the Hilbert function of \(H^i_{\mathfrak m}(R/I)\) is \(h(t).\) Then for fixed numbers \(n, i, r\) the set \(H_{n,i,r}\) has only finitely many elements.
