The paper deals with the Hochschild cohomology of algebras in monoidal abelian categories. It should be mentioned that the authors (and referee as well) were not aware of some important developments in this area. Extensions and cohomologies in symmetric monoidal categories were considered by \textit{V. A. Pachuashvili} [J. Pure Appl. Algebra 72, 109--147 (1991; Zbl 0732.18004), ibid., 149--205 (1991; Zbl 0732.18005)]. The Hochschild homology of algebras in braided tensor categories first was defined by Baez and then was further developed by \textit{M. Wambst} in his thesis [``Homologie des algébres quantiques'', Thése. Université Louis Pasteur (Strasbourg)]. Finally the Hochschild cohomology in arbitrary monoidal categories was defined by \textit{H.-J. Baues, M. Jibladze} and \textit{A. Tonks} [``Cohomology of monoids in monoidal categories'', Contemp. Math. 202, 137--165 (1997; Zbl 0860.18006)]. They even considered the case when monoidal structure is additive only with respect to the first variable in order to recover not only the usual Hochshild cohomology of algebras but also to define a cohomology theory for operads. The most of results obtained in Sections 1 and 2 of the paper under the review are particular cases of far more general results of Baues-Jibladze-Tonks.
