A scenario is proposed for creation and growth of black holes, considering a spherically symmetric matter distribution which is concentrated on a shell \(r = f(t)\). So the metric is Schwarzschild (or Minkowski) inside the shell and Schwarzschild outside the shell as well, but with a different mass parameter. The analytic extension of the exterior Schwarzschild metric has a horizon, and the paper centers around the question of whether or not the mass shell can reach this horizon in the course of time. The author expresses his ``strong conviction that no reasonable physical assumptions'' will allow this to happen.
