It is well-known that the order of the automorphism group \(G\) of a compact Riemann surface (CRS, for short) of genus \(g\geq 2\) is bounded from above by \(84(g-1)\), and that such a bound is optimal. If one considers CRS with some restriction on \(G\), the bound above may be improved. This paper deals with CRS such that \(G\) is abelian and such that \(| G| >4(g-1)\). Taking into account properties of the stabilizer subgroups [noticed by \textit{S. Nakajima}, J. Lond. Math. Soc. 36, 23--32 (1987; Zbl 0589.14033)], the author shows that only three infinite families and 11 exceptional cases of such CRS can occur.
