\textit{E. Arbarello, C. De Concini, V. G. Kac} and \textit{C. Procesi} computed in [Commun. Math. Phys. 117, No. 1, 1--36 (1988; Zbl 0647.17010)] the continuous cohomology of the Lie algebra of differential operators of order less or equal to \(1\) in one variable. It turns out that \(H^1\) is zero and \(H^2\) is three dimensional. The universal central extension is the \textit{twisted Heisenberg-Virasoro algebra}, i.e. the complex Lie algebra \({\mathcal L}\) defined by generators \(L_m\), \(I_m\), \(C\), \(C_I\) and \(C_{LI}\) for \(m\in{\mathbb Z}\) and Virasoro relations with central charge \(C\) for \(L_n\), Heisenberg relations with central charge \(C_I\) for the \(I_m\), and finally an action of the Virasoro algebra on the Heisenberg algebra twisted by a central charge \(C_{LI}\): \[ [L_n,I_m]\,=\,mI_{n+m}+\delta_{n,_m}(n^2+n)C_{LI}. \] The authors of the article under review study some questions concerning the representation theory of \({\mathcal L}\). \(L_0\), \(I_0\) and the central elements generate the \textit{Cartan subalgebra} \({\mathfrak H}\) of \({\mathcal L}\). Weight modules are as usual \({\mathfrak H}\)-diagonalizable modules. If in addition the weight spaces \(M_{\lambda}\) with respect to \(L_0\) are finite dimensional, the module is called a \textit{Harish-Chandra module}. The \textit{support} \(\text{ Supp}(M)\) is the set of complex numbers \(\lambda\) such that \(M_{\lambda}\not=0\). The main result is the following: let \(M\) be an irreducible weight \({\mathcal L}\)-module with some infinite dimensional weight space \(M_{\lambda}\). Then \(\text{ Supp}(M)=\lambda+{\mathbb Z}\) and all non-trivial weight spaces are infinite dimensional. As a corollary, the authors deduce that in case there is a non-trivial finite dimensional weight space, \(M\) is a Harish-Chandra module. The proof is based on similar results which are known for the Virasoro algebra.
