For a finitely generated associative algebra over a finite field \(\mathbb{F}_q\), the author defines the left ideal growth as the number \(a_n(R)\) of left ideals \(J\) of codimension \(n\) in \(R\). Similarly, \(m_n(R)\) is the number of maximal left ideals of codimension \(n\). These growth functions are analogues of the classical subgroup growth function introduced by M. Hall in 1949. Later analogues were defined also for ideals of commutative algebras and subalgebras of restricted Lie algebras. In the paper under review, the author computes the left ideal growth \(a_n({\mathbf A}_d)\) of the free associative algebra \({\mathbf A}_d\) of rank \(d\), by an explicitly given recurrent relation. Then he finds the asymptotics of \(a_n({\mathbf A}_d)\) and shows that \(m_n({\mathbf A}_d)\approx a_n({\mathbf A}_d)\) when \(n\) goes to infinity. These results give upper bounds also for \(a_n(R)\) and \(m_n(R)\) for arbitrary finitely generated algebras \(R\). As an application, the probability for a ``random'' homomorphism \({\mathbf A}_d\to M_n(\mathbb{F}_q)\) to be primitive (or transitive) tends to 1 as \(n\to\infty\).
