This paper is concerned with the reduction of the study of irreducible representations of the group algebra \({\mathbb K}G\), where \(G\) is a finite \(p\)-group and \({\mathbb K}\) is a field of characteristic zero, to the case of Roquette \(p\)-groups. A group whose every normal abelian subgroup is cyclic is called a Roquette \(p\)-group; these are of the following types: the cyclic group \(C_{p^m}\) with \(m\geq 0\), the quaternion group \(Q_{2^m}\) with \(m\geq 3\), the dihedral group \(D_{2^m}\) with \(m\geq 4\) and the semidihedral group \(SD_{2^m}\) with \(m\geq 4\). The author proves that for any irreducible representation \(\psi\) of \({\mathbb K}G\) there is a Roquette subquotient \(H/K\) (unique up to isomorphisms) and a unique faithful irreducible representation \(\varphi\) of \({\mathbb K}H/K\) such that \(\psi\) is tightly induced from \(\varphi\) (that is, \(\psi=\text{ind}_{H/K}^G(\varphi)\) and no Galois conjugate of \(\varphi\) occurs in \(\text{res}^G_{H/K}(\psi)-\varphi\). Then \(H/H\) is called a genetic subquotient for \(\psi\) and \(\varphi\) is the germ of \(\psi\) at \(H/K\). The genotype of \(\psi\) is defined to be \(H/K\), regarded as an abstract group. Consider a formal invariant \({\mathcal I}\) defined for all irreducible representations of all finite \(p\)-groups over all fields with characteristic zero. Then \({\mathcal I}\) is called a genetic invariant, if \({\mathcal I}\) is preserved by tight induction, Galois conjugacy, change of field and group isomorphism. It turns out that the genotype is a genetic invariant, and moreover, the genetic invariants of \(\psi\) are exactly the invariants of the genotype. Finally, some applications to counting Galois conjugacy of irreducible representations are given.
