The book under review is based on lectures given at a summer school on motivic homotopy theory at the Sophus Lie Centre in Nordfjordeid, Norway, in August 2002. It contains all necessary background material from algebraic topology (written by B.~Dundas) and algebraic geometry (by M.~Levine) needed for the construction and understanding of the triangulated category of motives and \(\mathbb{A}^1\)-homotopy theory (by V. Voevodsky, O. Röndigs, and P. A. Ostvaer). The first part is devoted to the topological background which includes the notions of simplicial sets, spectra, model structures and categories, motivic spaces and spectra. The goal of the second part is to collect the main facts on algebraic geometry to give the reader a convenient introduction and quick reference. These include the notions of schemes, Grothendieck topologies, sheaves, algebraic cycles and (higher) Chow groups. In the last part the authors introduce the homotopy category of motives and discuss its basic properties.
