This research mongraph is concerned with the complexity management in fuzzy models (fuzzy systems). The issue of systems complexity has become of paramount relevance when building fuzzy models of high-dimensional systems. The severity of the problem itself was exacerbated by the fact that most fuzzy models, and rule-based on models in particular, are transparent and hence their readability does not necessarily promote structures that are extremely concise. This book is one of the first comprehensive treatises that offers a timely and comprehensive coverage of this important subject area. The class of fuzzy models under discussion is focused on fuzzy rule-based systems (models) and embraces several categories of such models. The book consists of 10 chapters. The first five chapters cover some introductory material pertinent to the discussion (Chapter 1), introduce basic types of fuzzy rules (Chapter 2), discuss generic methods for rule base reduction (Chapter 3), and deliver a detailed exposition to the subject of the formal presentation and manipulation of fuzzy rule-based systems (Chapter 4 and 5). Chapter 6 to 9 bring forward a variety of reduction and manipulation techniques applied to fuzzy rule-bases. The topic of feedback rule bases is covered in an extensive manner by presenting several useful categories architecures where we distinguish between rule bases with local and global feedback, nested feedback, and multiple feedback). A discussion of formal techniques applied to fuzzy rule bases builds linkages to the concepts of inconsistent rules, rules filtering and complexity of the simplification techniques. Conclusions are offered in Chapter 10. A concise list of references forms a suite of the most pertinent publications in this area. In summary, the book is a useful compendium of recent results devoted to the simplification and manipulation of fuzzy rule based systems.
