Let \(X\) be a differentiable planar vector field defined in a neighborhood \(D\) of infinity. Assume that there exists \(\epsilon>0\) such that, for any \(p\in D\), the spectrum of \(DX(p)\) does not intersect the union \[ (-\epsilon,0]\cup\{z\in{\mathbb C}:\text{Re}z\geq 0\}. \] The authors show that (i) for any \(p\in D\) there exists a positive semitrajectory of \(p\); (ii) there exists a number \(T(X)\in[-\infty,\infty)\) (called the index of \(X\) at infinity) such that if \(T(X)<0\) (\(T(X)\geq 1\)), then infinity is a repeller (respectively, attractor) of the vector field \(X+v\) for some \(v\in{\mathbb R}^2\).
