Denote by \(\mathcal R\) the smallest class of compact spaces containing all metric compacta and closed under limits of continuous inverse sequences whose bonding maps are retractions. In this paper the class \(\mathcal R\) and a larger class \(\mathcal{RC}\) are further studied. It is shown that if \(X\in\mathcal{RC}\) is not Corson then the ordinal \(\omega_1+1\) embeds in \(X\). This generalizes a result on continuous images of Valdivia compacta obtained by Kalenda in 1999. It is an open question whether the class of Valdivia compacta is stable under retractions. The author proves that retracts of Valdivia compacta belong to the class \(\mathcal R\).
