The authors deal with the semilinear evolution second-order partial differential inequality \[ \begin{cases} u''+Lu\geq g(u')\quad &\text{in }\bigl((0,T) \times\Omega \bigr)\\ u(0,x)=u_0(x)\quad &\text{on }\Omega,\\ u_t (0,x)=u_1(x)\quad &\text{on }\Omega,\end{cases}\tag{1} \] on the phase space \((u_0,u_1)\in\mathbb{V}\times H\), where \(\Omega\) is a bounded smooth domain in \(\mathbb{R}^N\), \(H=L^2(\Omega)\), \(V\) a real Hilbert space that is continuously and densely embedded into \(H\). Moreover, the authors assume that \(L\in L(\mathbb{V},\mathbb{V}^*)\) is the unique linear continuous operator from \(\mathbb{V}\) to \(\mathbb{V}^*\), the dual of \(\mathbb{V}\), satisfying \[ \langle Lu,v\rangle=\langle u,v\rangle_\mathbb{V},\quad (u,v)\in\mathbb{V}\times \mathbb{V}^*\tag{2} \] such that, \(L\) admits an eigenvalue \(\lambda\) with a positive associated eigenfunction \(\varphi\in\mathbb{V}\). The authors assume that \(g\) is a positive convex function satisfying the growth condition \(g(x)\geq C|x|^q\) for all \(x\in \mathbb{R}\), where \(C>0\) is a constant and \(q>1\) or 2, or \(1<q\leq\frac{N+2}{N-2}\) if \(N\geq 3\). The authors provide sufficient conditions on the initial data \((u_0, u_1)\) so that the solution of problem (1) blows up in finite time. To this end they use here the so-called eigenfunction method.
