The Furuta inequality [\textit{T.\,Furuta}, Proc.\ Am.\ Math.\ Soc.\ 101, 85--88 (1987; Zbl 0721.47023)] says that if \(A\geq B\geq 0\), then \((B^rA^pB^r)^{\frac1q}\geq B^{\frac{p+2r}{q}}\) whenever \(r\geq0\), \(p\geq0\), and \(q\geq \max\{1,\frac{p+2r}{1+2r}\}\). In the present (very technical) paper, the author determines the region of all values \(\gamma\) such that the inequality \((A^\gamma A^\alpha A^\gamma)^\beta \geq (A^\gamma B^\alpha A^\gamma)^\beta\) holds for any two bounded Hilbert space operators with \(A\geq B\geq bI>0\) and for any given \(\alpha>0,\;\beta>0\). The connection to Furuta's inequality is established by pointing out that the inequality \((A^\gamma A^\alpha A^\gamma)^\beta \geq (A^\gamma B^\alpha A^\gamma)^\beta\) is equivalent to the inequality \((B^\gamma A^\alpha B^\gamma)^\beta \geq (B^\gamma B^\alpha B^\gamma)^\beta\).
