Let \(T\) be a bounded operator on a Banach space \(X\). The author studies the range of the operator \(T-I\) under the assumption that for some \(\gamma >-1\), the \(\gamma \)-th Cesàro means \(C_{n}^{\gamma }(T)\) of \(T\) are bounded, i.e., \(\sup_{n\geq 0}| | C_{n}^{\gamma }(T)| | <+\infty \). A similar study is carried out concerning the range of the generator \(A\) of a \(\gamma \)-th Cesàro mean bounded \(C_{0}\)-semigroup (or a strongly continuous cosine operator function) of bounded linear operators on \(X\).
