Multiplicative Lie rings were introduced by \textit{G. J. Ellis} [J. Aust. Math. Soc. Ser. A 54, 1--19 (1993; Zbl 0777.20001)]. They encode the structure of a group (which can be non-abelian) together with a `Lie bracket' product, which mimics the properties of the commutator. Examples include both groups with the commutator as the bracket, and also Lie rings themselves. This paper develops a theory of homology for these objects. The development follows the usual pattern involving analogues in this setting of freeness, free resolutions, simplicial techniques, perfect objects, a Hopf formula and so on. This is very elegant, but with some surprises. Central extensions of multiplicative Lie rings are defined and universal ones are studied. Comparison between universal central extensions of groups and the corresponding multiplicative Lie rings show that they are preserved via the commutator Lie ring functor. This theory is then applied to K-theory and cyclic homology. An analogue, \(St^{\text{mlr}}_n(R)\) of the Steinberg group is introduced in this context and is shown to give a universal central extension of the multiplicative Lie ring \(E(R)\times s\ell(R)\). The kernel of this extension is shown to be \(K_2(R)\times HC_1(R)\), where \(HC_1(R)\) is the first cyclic homology group of \(R\).
