      By showing that certain triple Samelson products of elements in the homotopy groups of \(U(n)\) are non-zero, the author shows that nil\(\, [SU(n),SU(n)]\geq 3\) for \(n\geq 4.\) He similarly shows that, for \(n\) a multiple of a prime \(p,\) nil\(\, [SU(n),SU(n)]_{(p)} \geq 3\) for \(p=5\) and \(n\equiv 0\) or \(1\) \(mod\, 4,\) and also for \(p\geq 7.\)
