In [\textit{J. Grbić} and \textit{J. Wu}, Algebr. Geom. Topol. 6, 2189--2228 (2006; Zbl 1147.55007)], the authors gave combinatorial descriptions of groups arising from natural coalgebra transformations of tensor algebras. In this paper, the authors apply these descriptions to study groups of homotopy classes of maps \(\Omega \Sigma X \to \Omega Y.\) The connection is obtained via the James construction \(J(X)\) modeling \(\Omega \Sigma X\). A variety of strong applications are given. The authors prove the homotopy triviality of the composite of the \(k\)th James-Hopf map and the \(n\)th iterated Whitehead product when \(k \nmid n\) and describe the first non-trivial case when \(k \mid n.\) Other applications concern exponents of groups of homotopy classes of maps and the Barratt Conjecture.
