Motivated by recent work of \textit{P.\,Ahern} and \textit{Ž.\,Čučković} [J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 187, No.\,1, 200--210 (2001; Zbl 0996.47037)] on the disk, the authors study the problem when the product of two Toeplitz operators is a Toeplitz operator or a compact perturbation of a Toeplitz operator. They consider the case of Toeplitz operators acting on the Bergman space over the polydisk. The main results of the paper are as follows. Theorem 1. Let \(u,v \in L^{\infty}\) be pluriharmonic symbols and assume that \(\sigma \in L^{\infty}\). Then the following statements are equivalent: (a) \(T_uT_v = T_{\sigma}\); (b) \(\sigma = uv\) and either \(\partial_j u = 0\) or \(\partial_j \overline{v} = 0\) for each \(j\). Theorem 2. Let \(u,v \in L^{\infty}\) be pluriharmonic symbols and assume that \(\sigma \in L^{\infty}\). Then the following statements are equivalent: (a) \(T_uT_v - T_{\sigma}\) is compact; (b) \(T_uT_v - T_{uv}\) and \(T_{uv - \sigma}\) are both compact. Theorem 3. Let \(u,v \in L^{\infty}\) be pluriharmonic symbols and assume that \(\sigma\in L^{\infty}\) is an \(n\)-harmonic symbol. Then the following statements are equivalent: (a) \(T_uT_v = T_{\sigma}\); (b) \(T_uT_v - T_{\sigma}\) is compact.
