A subgroup \(H\) of a finite group \(G\) is said to be a semi-cover-avoiding subgroup if it covers or avoids each factor of some chief series of \(G\) (recall that \(H\) is said to avoid a normal factor \(M/N\) of \(G\) -- i.e., \(N\leq M\) are normal subgroups of \(G\) -- if \(H\cap M=H\cap N\), while \(H\) is said to cover the factor \(M/N\) if \(HM=HN\)). The semi cover and avoidance property is a weaker property than the cover and avoidance property and behaves well in subgroups and quotients. It makes this property quite useful to study the structure of finite groups. In this paper the authors analyse the influence of the semi cover and avoidance property of some families of subgroups on the structure of a finite group. The paper contains a lot of interesting results in that direction. I mention two of them: Theorem 1.1. Let \(p\) be an odd prime dividing the order of a finite group \(G\) and let \(P\) be a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of \(G\). If \(N_G(P)\) is \(p\)-nilpotent and every maximal subgroup of \(P\) has the semi cover and avoidance property, then \(G\) is itself \(p\)-nilpotent. Theorem 1.2. Let \(\mathcal F\) be a saturated formation containing the supersoluble groups. If \(G\) is a group with a normal subgroup \(N\) such that \(G/N\in\mathcal F\) and, for every prime \(p\) dividing the order of \(N\), there exists a Sylow subgroup \(P\) of \(N\) with the minimal subgroups of \(P\cap O^p(G)\) having the semi cover and avoidance property in \(G\), then \(G\) belongs to \(\mathcal F\) provided that if \(p=2\), every cyclic subgroup of order \(4\) in \(P\) has also the semi cover and avoidance property in \(G\) and \(P\cap O^2(G)\) is quaternion-free.
