The exterior exponential transform of an open set \(\Omega\) in \(\mathbb R^n\) is defined for \(x\in \mathbb R^n\setminus \overline{\Omega}\) as \[ E(x)=\exp\left( -\frac{2}{| S_{n-1}| }\int_{\Omega}\frac{dy}{| x-y| ^n}\right). \] The interior exponential transform is defined for \(x\in \Omega\) as \[ H(x)=\lim_{R\to \infty}\frac{1}{R^2}\exp\left( \frac{2}{| S_{n-1}| }\int_{B_R\setminus \Omega}\frac{dy}{| x-y| ^n}\right). \] (Here \(B_R\) denotes the ball of radius \(R\) centered at the origin.) When \(\Omega\) is bounded and \(\partial \Omega\) is smooth then the exterior and interior transforms can be given in terms of boundary integrals, e.g. \[ H(x)=\exp\left( -\frac{2}{| S_{n-1}| }\int_{\partial \Omega}\log | x-y| d\theta(y-x)\right), \] where \(d\theta\) is the solid angle differential form. The main result of the paper is the following theorem: Let \(\Omega\) be a strictly convex bounded domain in \(\mathbb R^n\) with smooth real analytic boundary. Then there exists a real analytic function \(F\) defined in a neighbourhood of \(\overline{\Omega}\) such that \(F(x)=1/H(x)\) for \(x \in \Omega\). Furthermore, \(F=0\) and \(\nabla F\neq 0\) on \(\partial \Omega\). The result is formulated in terms of the exterior exponential transform and two expansions of the exterior exponential transform based on eigenfunctions and on Taylor series are given.
