Let \((\mathbb R^n,g)\) be the flat space where \(g=\sum_i\varepsilon_idx^i\circ dx^i\) is a pseudo-Riemannian metric. Assume \(n\geq3\). Let \(T=\sum_if_i(x_k)\varepsilon_idx_i^2\) depend on a single variable. The authors give necessary and sufficient conditions that there exists a metric \(\bar g\) which is conformally equivalent to \(g\) which solves the Ricci equation or which solves the Einstein equation: Theorem: Assume not all the \(f_i\) are constant and not all the \(f_i\) are equal. Let \(\bar g:=\phi^{-2}g\). (1) There exists \(\phi\) so that Ric\((\bar g)=T\) if and only if there exists a differentiable function \(U(x_k)\) so that \(f_k(x_k)=\varepsilon_k(n-1)U^{\prime\prime}(x_i)\), \(f_j(x_k)=\varepsilon_k(U^{\prime\prime}(x_k)-(n-2)(U^\prime(x_k))^2)\) for \(j\neq k\), \(\phi=e^{U(x_k)}\). (2) There exists \(\phi\) so that Ric\((\bar g)-\bar K\bar g/2=T\) if and only if there exists a differentiable function \(U(x_k)\) so that \(f_k(x_k)=\varepsilon_k(n-1)(n-2)/2U^{\prime\prime}(x_i)\), \(f_j(x_k)=\varepsilon_k(n-2)((n-3)U^{\prime}(x_k)^2/2-U^{\prime\prime}(x_k))\) for \(j\neq k\), \(\phi=e^{U(x_k)}\). (3) If \(\phi(x_k)\leq C\) for some \(C>0\), then the metrics given in (1) and (2) are complete. Results are also obtained on the cylinder, \(n\)-dimensional torus, and half spaces.
