Suppose that \(f\) is a genus \(2\) Siegel cusp eigenform of weight \(k>2\) and that the eigenvalues are rational. If \(f\) is not of Saito-Kurakawa type but is endoscopic then the corresponding family \(\{\rho_{f,l}\}\) of Galois representations is known to be reducible over \({\mathbb Q}\), with two \(2\)-dimensional components. This paper sketches a proof of a partial converse. Some extra conditions are assumed: for instance, the local component at \(3\) of the corresponding automorphic representation is required to be unramified. It is fairly simple to show, using earlier methods of the author, that \(\rho_{f,l}\cong\sigma_{1,l}\oplus\sigma_{2,l}\) for \(\sigma_{i,l}\) odd irreducible \(2\)-dimensional Galois representations with some good properties. The question is whether these representations are modular. For \(\sigma_{1,l}\), with Hodge-Tate weights \(\{k-1,k-2\}\) this follows by a version of Wiles's argument. For \(\sigma_{1,l}\), with Hodge-Tate weights \(\{0,2k-3\}\) this does not work and instead the author follows \textit{R.~Taylor} [Ann. Fac. Sci. Toulouse, VI. Sér., Math. 13, No. 1, 73--119 (2004; Zbl 1074.11030)] and uses recent results of D.~Whitehouse [The twisted weighted fundamental lemma for the transfer of automorphic forms from GSp(4) to GL(4), PhD thesis, Caltech (2005)].
