The problem of diffraction through a slit \([-1,+1]\) on the real axis in a plane screen is considered for arbitrary Dirichlet data, prescribed on the slit and under condition that the normal derivative of the diffracted wave vanishes on the screen. In the first part of the paper [Z. Angew. Math. Phys. 53, No. 5, 877--886 (2002; Zbl 1016.45001)] the author constructed even \(f^{(e)}_j\) and odd \(f^{(o)}_j\) functions (called ``slit functions'') which are particular solutions of the convolution equation on the interval \([-1,1]\) with the first kind Hankel functions as kernels and particular right hand sides. Such boundary integral equation is associated with the time harmonic problem of diffraction by the slit in a plane screen, mentioned above. The functions \(f^{(e)}_j\) and \(f^{(o)}_j\) are defined on the entire axis \(\mathbb{R}\). Approximation of a solution to the original diffraction problem by polynomials of ``slit functions'' with the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process is suggested. By involving the remaining degree of freedom, the author suggests a representation of the solution (i.e., of the diffracted wave) by a series of Hankel functions with explicitly written coefficients.
