The paper is devoted to a one-dimensional quasilinear parabolic equation with a maximal monotone operator that is a subdifferential of a convex lower semicontinuous function. By using Lyapunov methods the authors show that the lap number cannot increase through orbits as the time passes if the initial data are continuous. This assumption allows dealing with resolvent conditions by using elementary methods. The authors apply the lap number properties to reach an understanding on the asymptotic behavior of a particular problem. This is then used to obtain comprehension about the connections among the equilibrium points in the attractor.
