Let \(I\) be a monomial ideal in a polynomial ring \(P=k[x_1,\dots, x_n]\) over a field \(k\). The authors study the Poincaré series of the free resolution of \(k\) over \(P/I\), i.e. the generating function of its graded Betti numbers. It has been shown by \textit{J. Backelin} [C. R. Acad. Sci., Paris, Sér. I 295, 607--610 (1982; Zbl 0518.13016)] that this is a rational power series, and the first author has expressed its numerator in [\textit{A. Berglund}, J. Algebra 295, No. 1, 211--230 (2006; Zbl 1101.13023] as a polynomial involving the ranks of the reduced homology groups of a certain lattice \(K_I\). The main topic of the paper under review is to further study and explain this denominator. For this purpose, the authors show that \(K_I\) is the intersection lattice \(L_{{\mathcal A}(I)}\) of a hypergraph arrangement \({\mathcal A}(I)\) which has been studied by combinatorists before. In this way, they are able to simplify the denominator in many cases, for instance for monomial ideals generated in degree two, for monomial ideals generated by bases of matroids, and for so-called complete lattices. Moreover, the authors give conditions under which \(P/I\) is a Golod ring.
