In the paper under review, the authors use techniques from tabular algebra to give a general method of getting cellularity of a family of algebras from diagram calculi. The main purpose in the paper is a generalization of a result of the first named author [\textit{R. M. Green}, J. Algebra 252, No. 1, 27-64 (2002; Zbl 1062.16030)]. With this generalization, the authors can give a shorter proof of the cellularity for many known algebras, or construct certain new cellular algebras. Among interesting families of algebras covered by their results are Brauer algebras, cyclotomic Temperley-Lieb algebras, contour algebras, walled Brauer algebras and Jones' annular algebras. Their method in the paper might also be used to treat Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebras which were first proved to be cellular by the reviewer [\textit{C.-C. Xi}, Adv. Math. 154, No. 2, 280-298 (2000; Zbl 0971.16008)] by an abstract setting and later by \textit{J. Enyang} [J. Algebra 281, No. 2, 413-449 (2004; Zbl 1070.20006)] by a combinatorical setting.
