Roughly, a generalized complex manifold is a manifold \(M\) with a complex structure on \(T\oplus T^{\ast }\) and a generalized Kähler manifold is a manifold with a pair of commuting generalized complex structures. This paper shows that there is a differential graded algebra associated to a generalized complex manifold which is formal in the generalized Kähler case. This is used to show that a nilpotent Lie algebra does not have a generalized Kähler structure.
