A conformal vector of a vertex operator algebra is called an Ising vector if it generates a subalgebra isomorphic to the simple Virasoro vertex operator algebra of central charge \(1/2\). Ising vectors play an important role in various examples of vertex operator algebras (e.g. \textit{M. Miyamoto} [J. Algebra 179, 523--548 (1996; Zbl 0964.17021), Ann. Math. (2) 159, 535--596 (2004; Zbl 1133.17017)], \textit{C. H. Lam, H. Yamada} and \textit{H. Yamauchi} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 359, 4107--4123 (2007; Zbl 1139.17011)]). Let \(R\) be a root lattice of type \(A\), \(D\) or \(E\) of rank \(\ell\). It is known by [\textit{C. Dong, H. Li, G. Mason} and \textit{S. P. Norton}, The Monster and Lie algebras. Proceedings of a special research quarter at the Ohio State University, Columbus, OH, USA, May 1996. Berlin: de Gruyter. Ohio State Univ. Math. Res. Inst. Publ. 7, 27--42 (1998; Zbl 0946.17011)] that the Virasoro element of \(V_{\sqrt{2}R}^+\) is a sum of two mutually orthogonal conformal vectors \(s_R\) and \(\widetilde{\omega}_R\) of central charge \(h\ell/(h+2)\) and \(2\ell/(h+2)\), respectively, where \(h\) is the Coxeter number of the root system. In the paper under review the authors first classify the Ising vectors of the vertex operator algebra associated with an even binary linear code. Then using this result, the authors classify the Ising vectors of \(V_{\sqrt{2}R}^+\) and \(M_R\), where \(M_R\) denotes the commutant of \(\widetilde{\omega}_R\) in \(V_{\sqrt{2}R}^+\). Moreover, it is shown that \(M_R\) is generated by its Ising vectors. The automorphism group of \(M_R\) is also determined.
