Let \(X\) be a smooth complex algebraic variety and \(\mathfrak b \subset \mathcal O_X\) be an ideal sheaf. For any rational number \(c>0\), one can define the corresponding multiplier ideal sheaf \(\mathcal J (\mathfrak b ^c)\subset \mathcal O _X\). These ideals are of fundamental importance in algebraic geometry and therefore there is considerable interest in understanding their properties. It is known for example that multiplier ideals are integrally closed and that in dimension \(\leq 2\) all integrally closed ideals can be locally realized as multiplier ideals. In dimension \(\geq 3\) this fails. The purpose of the paper under review is to give some new algebraic properties satisfied by multiplier ideals which in dimension \(\geq 3\) which are not satisfied by many integrally closed ideals. It is shown in particular that: If \((\mathcal O , \mathfrak m)\) is the local ring of a smooth \(d\)-dimensional complex algebraic variety \(X\) at a point \(x\) and if \(\mathcal J (\mathfrak b ^c)\) is a multiplier ideal, then for any \(p\geq 1\) no minimal \(p\)-th syzygy of \(\mathcal J (\mathfrak b ^c)\) vanishes modulo \(\mathfrak m ^{d+1-p}\).
