The authors study almost Kähler-Einstein structures on 8-dimensional Walker ma\-ni\-folds, i.e., pseudo-Riemannian 8-manifolds admitting a field of parallel null 4-planes, whence the metric is of neutral signature. There is a famous conjecture by Goldberg, which states that the almost complex structure of a compact almost Kähler-Einstein Riemannian manifold is integrable. Sekigawa proved that the Goldberg conjecture is true if the scalar curvature is non-negative. The authors construct on \(\mathbb R^8\) explicit almost Kähler-Einstein Walker metrics which are not Kähler. An appropriate restriction induces examples of such metrics on the 8-torus, thereby producing a counterexample to Goldberg's conjecture in the case of neutral signature. Whether this result has any bearing on the original conjecture of Goldberg for Riemannian manifolds remains unclear, although this example, being Ricci flat, indicates that Sekigawa's result fails for neutral signature.
