Let \(X\subset\mathbb{P}^r_\mathbb{C}\) be a projective \(n\)-dimensional variety. Its \(k\)-secant variety, Sec\(_k(X)\), is the closure of the union of the \((k-1)\)-planes meeting \(k\) points in \(X\) in general position. In the paper under review, the authors compute the dimension and degree of the secant variety Sec\((X):=\text{Sec}_2(X)\) of a smooth toric variety \(X=X_P\), associated to a smooth polytope \(P\), equivariantly embedded in the projective space, in Theorem~1.4. In particular, they can decide when this secant variety has the expected dimension, and they exibit -- in this case -- the explicit formulas in dimension \(2\) and \(3\). Finally, they study the toric varieties \(X_A\), embedded using a subset of lattice points \(A\subset P\cap \mathbb{Z}^n\). When \(A\) contains the vertices of \(P\) and their nearest neighbors along the edges, they compute the dimension of Sec\,\(X_A\) and obtain partial results about deg(Sec\,\(X_A\)).
