This paper provides a purely homotopy theoretic construction of Poincaré embeddings in stable codimension. The approach is to define a spectrum corresponding to an inclusion \(H \subset G\) of topological groups. In the case where \(H = G\) this coincides with the dualizing spectrum \(D_{G}\) defined by the author [Math. Ann. 319, No. 3, 421--456 (2001; Zbl 0982.55004)]. To describe the Poincaré embedding the author first gives a purely homotopy theoretic definition of the concept of a Poincaré embedding. The dualizing spectrum \(D_{G}\) can be used to obtain the Spivak normal bundle associated to \(BG\) when this is a finitely dominated space. To construct an embedding of a Poincaré duality space \(P\) in \(N \times D^{n}\) for large \(n\), one starts with \(H = \Omega P\) and \(G = \Omega N\), then the Borel construction that earlier gave the Spivak normal bundle of \(BG\) can be extended to give an embedding of \(P\) in a spherical bundle over \(N\), which must then be `untwisted' to get an embedding of \(P\) in \(N \times D\).
