The authors del with the equation \[ u_t- \int^\infty_0 k(s) u_{xx}(t- s)\,ds+ \varphi(u)= f(x),\quad t> 0,\tag{1} \] \[ u(0,t)= u(\ell,t)= 0,\quad t\geq 0,\tag{2} \] where \(u= u(x,t): (0,\ell)\times \mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\), \(k: [0,\infty)\to [0,\infty)\) is a suitable memory kernel, the function \(\varphi\) is a smooth nonlinearly with (at most) cubic growth, and \(f\) is a given external force. The authors show that a suitable reformulation of (1)--(2), endowed with the initial condition \[ u(-s)=\widehat u_0(s),\quad s\geq 0\quad\text{in }(0,\ell) \] defines a dissipative dynamical system on an appropriate phase space. Then the authors prove their main result, that is, there exists a global attractor, provided that the relaxation time \(\varepsilon\) is small enough.
