Let \(N\) be a zero-symmetric left near-ring with multiplicative center \(Z\), and \(d\) a derivation on \(N\). The author calls an additive endomorphism \(f\) on \(N\) a generalized derivation associated with \(d\) if \(f(xy)=f(x)y+xd(y)=d(x)y+xf(y)\) for all \(x,y\in N\). (Note that most authors require only that \(f(xy)=f(x)y+xd(y)\) for all \(x,y\in N\).) The principal theorems assert that if \(N\) is 3-prime and 2-torsion-free and \(f\) is a generalized derivation with \(d\neq 0\), then \(N\) is a commutative ring if one of the following holds: (a) \(f(N)\subseteq Z\); (b) \([f(N),f(N)]=\{0\}\). Unfortunately, the proofs are incorrect.
