Let \((M,g)\) be a smooth compact manifold with smooth boundary and smooth vector bundle \(V.\) Let \(D\) be a smooth second order operator over \(M\) with scalar leading symbol and let \(D_B\) be the corresponding operator with Zaremba boundary conditions. The total heat energy content of \(M\) is defined by: \(\beta(\phi,\phi^\ast,D,B)(t)=\int_M \left<e^{-tD_B}\phi,\phi^\ast\right> dx,\) where \(\phi\in C^\infty(M,V),\) \(\phi^\ast \in C^\infty(M,V^\ast).\) The authors prove that there exists a complete asymptotic expansion \(\beta(\phi,\phi^\ast,D,B)(t)\sim \sum_{n\geq 0} \beta_n(\phi,\phi^\ast,D,B)t^{n/2}.\) Moreover, the first three coefficients are given explicitly and a formula is provided for the fourth coefficient. An example on the half-plane is also considered.
